1953s

1953s

In 1953, Mr. Shui-Chin Chen founded “Shuen Der Manufacturing Company” to make Hand-brand pencil knives
The “SDI’s Pencil Knife” was the first iteration of the SDI Master Knife. It was created in 1953 and was the first pencil knife made in Taiwan.
Post-war shortages even in everyday necessities meant that even knife blades had to be imported as there wasn’t even a “metal processing industry.”
The conditions at the time meant that scrap metal from canned foods was stamped to make knife handles. The different patterns on the early knife handles were the result of these cans. Later on, recycled beer cans were also used as a source of metallic materials.

1971s

1971s

In 1971, SDI developed the first “one-piece” pencil knife
“SDI’s Master Knife” was a household name at the time and is a memory fondly shared by the Baby Boomer generation.
Advances in technology meant all kinds of metal stationery products began to crop up.
Export orders for compasses, stationery clips, pins and staplers all grew at a rapid pace.

1983s

1983s

In 1983, SDI reinvented itself as a manufacturer of lead frames used in the semiconductor industry
SDI entered the semiconductor industry in 1983 because the “continuous stamping process” it used to manufacture metal stationery products was a key component in the semiconductor industry. This core technology showed that SDI was right to insist on engaging in innovative R&D. Today, SDI is a world-renowned semiconductor lead frame maker. It was publicly listed in 1996.

1988s

1988s

In 1988, SDI updated the Hand trademark to the letters SDI in blue on a white background
In 1988, SDI recognized the importance of international branding and updated its Hand trademark to the letters SDI in blue on a white background. In addition to marketing its products worldwide under the SDI brand, SDI has built a reputation for high quality through OEM services to leading European, American and Japanese brands.

2005s

Invention of the “i-PUSH CORRECTION TAPE” a world first
In 2005, SDI set up a R&D center focusing on the development of innovative stationery. The center achieved its first success in the same year with the invention of the “i-PUSH CORRECTION TAPE.” The exceptional mechanical design raised the bar for correction tape and more than 20 million units were produced per year. Ever since, SDI has continued to develop its culture of innovation and strong portfolio of R&D technologies to produce unique niche products for the market.
